Cold saponification, the quality guarantee

Saponification à froid, la garantie qualité

La Savonnerie du Malt soaps and shampoos are produced by cold saponification.

Cold saponification is a manufacturing process at room temperature that preserves all the benefits of soap for your skin and hair.
We'll share some information with you that will help you understand how it works and why it's good for you!

Cold saponification, what is the principle?

Cold saponification is a natural, simple and slow chemical process which requires only two main ingredients: a fatty substance, which can be a vegetable oil or butter, as well as a "strong base".

For solid soaps, it is sodium hydroxide, more commonly called soda (use with great care!), and for liquid soaps, it is potash (a mineral).

The strong base is what allows the fatty substance to turn into soap. Once the product is finished, after a drying time of 4 to 5 weeks, the soap no longer contains any trace of soda or potash.

The benefits of cold saponified soap

As its name suggests, the first virtue of cold saponification lies in the fact that the ingredients are not heated!

Their natural properties are not altered by the rise in temperature. The ingredients retain all their natural properties. The first of these being hydration, thanks to the glycerin which emerges from the saponification process. Or even vitamins that are excellent for the skin, A and E, anti-oxidant and protective.

Cold saponified soaps provide the epidermis with many benefits and are even suitable for sensitive or atopic skin and those prone to allergies. However, while they are suitable for the body, they can be drying on some faces.

Pierre, our soap maker, scrupulously ensures respect for the ingredients and the cold saponification process to create healthy products.

Commercial cold saponification

Cold saponified soaps are of course available, particularly in artisanal shops and markets, but also in certain traditional stores or drugstores.

Find out about the origin and composition of the soaps described on the label. Cold saponified soaps are highly sought after and are indicated as such.
However, there is no official, authentic label, apart from a non-obligatory logo that is increasingly widespread: “SAF” (cold saponified soap). There are mentions of the “slow cosmetic” or organic type which can also guide you.

Made by small soap producers or by eco-responsible cosmetics companies, they are made in varying quantities, but with the same basic ingredients and on the same principle.

At Savonnerie du Malt, it is the Nature et Progrès label which certifies the natural quality of the products. We will tell you more about this subject in a future article.

Amazing

Marseille and Aleppo soaps are not cold saponified soaps!!!!

Contrary to what you might think, both require heated preparation #hot saponification.

In the purest tradition, Marseille soap is cooked for 10 days at 120°C. For Aleppo soap, it is olive oil alone which is first heated for several days, before adding laurel berry oil.
